This photo journal, part of my Queensland Australia 2009 series, features the picturesque mountain city of Toowoomba located 82 miles west of Brisbane. Established in the 1840's, it now has an urban population of about 120,000. The name Toowoomba was derived from the Aboriginal word 'tawampa' meaning swamp. (Toowoomba began as a swamp which was later drained.) The city crowns the edge of the Great Dividing Range 700 meters (2,300 ft) above sea level.
